What to See

Five places that give you the city's whole arc — faith, history, memory, and the border it sits fifteen miles from.

Harmandir Sahib

The Golden Temple

The holiest gurdwara in Sikhism, its upper floors gilded in gold, set within the Amrit Sarovar. Free entry, open around the clock.

1919

Jallianwala Bagh

The walled garden associated with the 1919 massacre. Bullet marks are preserved in the brick walls.

Museum

Partition Museum

Oral histories and objects from the 1947 Partition, told largely through the words of those who lived it.

Daily, sunset

Wagah Border

The daily flag-lowering ceremony at the India–Pakistan border, with a full grandstand on both sides.

1809

Gobindgarh Fort

A Sikh-era fort turned heritage park, with a small museum on the region's military history.

Local Cuisine

What to Eat

Amritsar is the reason "Amritsari" is a prefix on menus across India. Eat in the old city and plan on a long lunch.

01

Amritsari Kulcha

A stuffed, tandoor-baked bread — usually potato or paneer — served with chickpea curry and butter.

₹60 – 150
02

Lassi

Thick, cardamom-dusted, and served in a glass tall enough to double as a meal.

₹80 – 180
03

Amritsari Fish

Freshwater fish marinated in gram flour and spices, then deep-fried whole.

₹250 – 450
04

Langar, at the Temple

Dal, roti, rice, and kheer, served to anyone who sits down — free, around the clock.

No charge
Daily Schedule

A Day at the Golden Temple

The shrine runs on its own clock. These are the moments worth timing your visit around.

~03:00–04:00

Prakash — the scripture is opened

The Guru Granth Sahib is carried from the Akal Takht to the sanctum in a quiet, early procession.

Early morning

Parikrama, before the heat

Walk the marble path circling the sarovar while the light is flat and the crowds are thin.

All day

Langar runs continuously

The community kitchen never stops. Visitors are welcome to help serve or clean.

Just after sunset

The dome catches the last light

The gold facade shifts from bright to amber over about twenty minutes — the best window for photographs.

~21:30–22:30

Palki Sahib — the scripture is put to rest

The reverse of the morning procession, accompanied by hymns.

Before You Go In

Shrine Etiquette

The Golden Temple is a working place of worship, not a monument.

1

Cover your head

Scarves are provided free at the entrance if you don't have one.

2

Remove your shoes

Free cloakrooms are at every entrance — keep the token.

3

No alcohol, tobacco, or meat

Not inside the complex, and best avoided nearby too.

4

Wash your feet

Shallow foot-washing pools sit at each entrance — walk through, don't step around.

Getting around the old city

  • The old city core is walkable — cars can't reach most lanes near the shrine
  • E-rickshaws are the easiest way to cover longer distances cheaply
  • Book a taxi in advance for the Wagah Border trip — traffic backs up before the ceremony
  • Ola and Uber operate in Amritsar but coverage thins past the old city
